Billing and coding are the most fun party topic, there are just so many varieties and flavors. We’d like to talk about a few coding cocktails for surgical billing specifically.
10040 is used in the incision and drainage of hematomas or subcutaneous fluid collection, this is used regardless of whether the wound is left open or closed and can be used if there is the use of packing the wound or not.
10060-10061 or as it’s more commonly thought of and incision and drainage of an abscess. There are so many forms and types this could take, like a cyst, carbuncle, cutaneous and sub-cutaneous abscess, and so on.
10080-10081 or as an expert knows, this is an incision and drainage of pilonidal cyst. 10080 is used if the cyst is left open to drain on its own. If the incision is packed, or you’ve been given multiple incisions on your cyst, the 10081 code would be used.
